Tax Avoidance and the Paradise Papers

Post by Wax »

Tax Avoidance and the Paradise Papers

This story has been floating around for a few days now.
Some people are putting their money in off-shore accounts and are obviously working the system to suit themselves.
Had this practice been illegal, then yeah expose it but its not illegal so why is it an issue now?
The media have managed to get hold of leaked details from some off-shore accounts and have broadcast some of this.
The stars of Mrs Brown's Boys have been exposed and made an example of as well as Lewis Hamilton and the Queen!
These Paradise Papers are exposing otherwise confidential information.

Maybe I am missing something but these people have accountants who tell them how to manage their money.
If I had some money to invest I would shop around too.
After all, we do this every day while shopping.

My only thoughts are that money is drying up and the governments are now victimising wealthy people so they pay more tax.
Or maybe the banks want their cut of the business.
By putting this story to the press, they can whip up a frenzy and shame people - while doing legal things!
If the authorities detect illegal activities and act, fair enough but at the moment its all speculation.
Tax havens are legal.
Besides, tax avoidance isn't a crime.
Not paying tax when you owe it might be however.

I am not sticking up for the rich people, only demonstrating that something is bubbling up here but I don't know what.
It would be easy for me to jump on the bandwagon and say these people should put their money elsewhere and pay the right taxes.
Then that money can help with services etc.
However, all I can see is that some powerful people are stirring things up for the moderately rich people and want a cut of the money in the tax havens.

Oh and its not a news story because look at the following lyrics from The Members - Offshore Banking Business from 1979.
This sort of thing has always happened and always will.
But the good old media want to have a little drama while having their cages rattled from some unknown source.

Bermuda in the Bahamas, Front Street Hamilton
They're doing more than growing bananas, they've got a tax dodge going on
Offshore Banking Business, International Crime!
Offshore Banking Business, Happening all the time!

Here's the video to The Members song above.

This is a non-story to be honest.
Just the media and a few people sticking their noses where they are not wanted.

Didn't realise The Members sang Offshore Banking Business. I only remember them for Sounds of the Suburbs and those two songs are completely different :o

Anyone who doesn't use the proper ways, whatever they are, to save the fruits of their labour need their head examining.
OK, money is the route of all evil but at the end of the day, these people have slaved away to get it.
Time is money, and these people are only looking after their time (money).

So, these people are moving their credits around the world
But where is their original money?
Proves that money doesn't really exist, its just credits.
