Are vitamin tablets useless?

I ask this because of an article I just read which says that we will not absorb all the vitamins in vitamin packed drinks etc.
However, the article says that vitamin D could be the exception.
It went on to say that those who took vitamin D supplements regularly lived longer on average.
A proper balanced died will give you all the goodness you require but what about times when you can't eat good food for long spells?
Then there are those who are sick and need extra vitamins.
I was off my food for over a year and bought about 300 vitamin pills from ebay for a few pounds as a supplement.
I was convinced they were doing me good.
Studies now are telling me they may have been just been like a placebo effect on me.
If our bodies are not absorbing as much would it be wise to take more than the recommended daily intake?
When I was using them I only took one a day as that was recommended.
So, what do others think about vitamin supplements?

Here's the article - https://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/arti ... money.html

No, vitamin tablets are not a waste of time and money.
Some people with eating disorders need them.
If the body is not absorbing the concentrated vitamins then it's time to look into this and develop them better.

I wouldn't worry about this study.
Vitamin tablets are necessary for some people.

From what I gather, vitamins and other elements are useless on their own.
For instance, iron needs vitamin C to help absorption.
Others will also interact too.
So, all in all things have to be well balanced.

I think that I will keep taking these supliments in times of illness.
Vitamins have been around for such a long time and are known to be beneficial.
Some surveys are misleading.
