Jon Platt Wins Term Time Holiday Challenge

A father who took his 6 year old daughter out of school for a family trip to Florida in the United States has won a challenge by Isle of Wight Council. His daughter had a total of 12 days off last year and says this has not harmed the girl's education.

Mr Platt did not have permission from the girl's school and so he was issued with a £60.00 fixed penalty but Mr Platt refused to pay it. This was then doubled to £120.00.

The law just says that children need to attend school regularly - not every day!

Originally, Mr Platt won his case at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court where the court say there was no case to answer
because there was no proof that Mr Platts daughter failed to attend school "regularly".

The local council appealed against the decision.

Mr Platt went all the way to the High Court which has cost him £13,000.

However, because the High Court agreed that Mr Platt's daughter attended school regularly he will now send that bill to the Isle of Wight Council.

Rightly so!
If the local authority doesn't understand the law then they shouldn't be running the schools!
